Campbell scientific Soil Vue 10
The SoilVUE 10 is an advanced profile soil moisture, temperature and electrical conductivity (EC) sensor designed for long term in situ monitoring. Using Campbell Scientific’s proprietary TrueWave™ TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) technology, this sensor delivers high resolution volumetric water content (VWC) data at multiple depths within a single probe.
Installation is simplified via a hand‐augerable hole (~5 cm diameter) and a threaded sensor body ensures excellent soil contact, minimising measurement error from air gaps.
With one sensor you can monitor six depths (0.5 m version) or nine depths (1.0 m version) of soil, making it ideal for environmental research networks, hydrology studies, precision agriculture and long term monitoring installations.
Key Feature
- • Multi depth measurement (6 or 9 depths) from a single probe for efficient profiling.
- • Measures Volumetric Water Content (VWC), dielectric permittivity, electrical conductivity (EC) of soil and soil temperature.
- • TrueWave™ TDR technology with helical wave guides built into threaded sensor body to optimise soil contact.
- • Digital output via SDI 12 version 1.4, compatible with most Campbell Scientific dataloggers for easy integration.
- • Robust design for long term outdoor use: operating temperature range –40 °C to +60 °C.
- • Low impact installation: standard 5 cm (2 in) auger hole; no heavy excavation required.
Technincal Specification
Application
- • Environmental monitoring & research: soil water content profiling for eco hydrology, watershed studies and climate studies.
- • Precision agriculture: root zone moisture monitoring to support irrigation scheduling, water use efficiency and crop health.
- • Soil science: studying soil moisture dynamics, percolation, and unsaturated zone processes.
- • Long term installations: remote field sites, meteorological and hydrological networks requiring robust, low maintenance measurement.
- • Data network integration: compatible with telemetry and IoT solutions for real time soil monitoring.
Benifits To Users
- • High resolution soil moisture profiling from a single sensor reduces equipment cost and installation time.
- • TrueWave™ TDR means reliable, reproducible data comparable across sensors and sites.
- • Low impact installation reduces disturbance to soil structure, improving measurement reliability.
- • Digital output (SDI 12) ensures seamless integration into data logging and telemetry systems.
- • Broad temperature and environmental compatibility ensure durability for long term field use.
Best Practice /Consideration
- • Although the probe supports 0–100% VWC, soils with high organic matter (>12% soil organic carbon) or high clay content (>45% clay) may require soil specific calibration for best accuracy.
- • Ensure the auger hole is properly prepared and the probe screwed in to specification to guarantee good soil contact and minimise air gaps.
- • Regularly inspect the detachable cable and connector (IP67 M12) for field durability and replace if damaged.
- • For long term installations, ensure power supply and datalogger compatibility with SDI 12 output.
- • When interpreting EC and VWC results, consider soil temperature and moisture condition – the data are richer when used in a context of soil profile and time.
